Gap Year Assistants

We have six or seven Assistants who volunteer with us for approximately one whole year. Generally they are young international people who enjoy the work and want to make a valuable and lasting contribution to the work we do.

They become involved in nearly all aspects of our work and the role is varied, practical and enjoyable. We know that we gain so much from working with the Assistants and hope that their year with us is informative and helpful for their future.

If you would be interested in becoming a Gap Year Assistant, or know someone who would, then please read on.

Brief Job Description & Role of SCT Assistants
Practical Tasks
Within the Projects, Assistants will engage in various simple everyday practical tasks, such as serving customers in the shops, chatting with residents and clients in our projects, making tea, playing board games, some cleaning and even some cooking perhaps. In addition, some assistants may be given specific tasks, perhaps according to their abilities. Many of these tasks may seem unimportant but, if they are performed thoroughly and efficiently, the Projects are able to run more smoothly and the residents and clients are able to concentrate on their recovery without additional, avoidable problems.

Social Interaction
The most vital and enjoyable role is that of socialising and interacting with the residents in Acorn House (rehabilitation centre) and at the Drop-in Centre. Because of the unique role of Assistants within the Projects, you will have the opportunity to give the residents' time to talk informally, over a game of pool. Currently, one assistant leads a Creative Writing class, whilst another leads a simple Spanish Language class. In the past, assistants have led a Drama class, Cooking classes and Arts and Craft classes. Could you help in any such ways? Do you play a guitar? Could you help someone learn to read? Whatever your skills, there is a place for you here. It can take some people time to find their role in our organisation, but people always enjoy this placement in proportion to the effort that they put into it.
